Why do my gums bleed when I floss?
Bleeding while flossing can be due to a number of causes. If you do not have your teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis, plaque can calcify, becoming an irritant below the gum line. If this calcification is not removed, your gums may easily bleed when you brush and floss. This is a sign that your teeth and gums are not healthy. Certain medications and pregnancy can also cause your gums to bleed more easily. Routine dental visits would minimize this problem.

Why is flossing so important?
Flossing is the only way to clean the areas between your teeth effectively. Many new cavities begin in these areas,swiss replica watches where it is impossible to clean with only a toothbrush. More importantly, bacteria that can accumulate in these areas often lead to gum disease and bone loss. People who do not floss are at a much higher risk for gum disease later in life!

Why are the old silver fillings rarely used anymore?
Until recently, silver fillings were the standard of care for most dental fillings. Tooth-colored composite fillings were available, but there were some problems with strength and longevity. Now, materials and techniques have improved to the point that composite fillings have many advantages over silver fillings, and they are the filling material we use more often. There are times, however, when the best choice for your tooth is a silver filling. We can help you choose which is best for your needs.

Why does a tooth need a crown?
Teeth may need crowns for several reasons. A tooth may lose its structural integrity because decay has weakened it, a large filling is breaking down, or trauma has caused cracks or fractures. The crown fits over the tooth like a thimble over your finger, strengthening the tooth and protecting it from further decay.

What is the difference between a gold and porcelain crown? Is one better than the other?
Both gold and porcelain crowns cover and protect a tooth to give it a longer life. It is possible to be more conservative with the amount of tooth removed for a gold crown. Most people, however, prefer porcelain for their natural look.

What is a metal-free crown?
A metal-free, or all-ceramic crown, has no base metal. These crowns are bonded into place instead of cemented like a regular porcelain crown.

What makes a root canal necessary?
Root canal treatment (endodontics) treats problems with the nerve (?pulp?) the tooth. These problems can be caused by trauma, physical irritation caused by deep decay, or severe gum disease. The pulp of the tooth then becomes irritated and infected; causing pressure and pain, although sometimes this happens so gradually that little pain is felt. Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp.

If I get a crown will I still need a root canal?
Probably not: only approximately 20% of teeth with crowns will later require root canal (endodontic) therapy. Crowns are used to strengthen and protect the structure of teeth that are damaged by decay, have large fillings, or are broken. Some teeth may require endodontic treatment before crown placement, but in most cases, the tooth won't need a root canal following a crown.

I just had a root canal treatment. Does my tooth need a crown now?

Yes. There are now partial dentures available that use a flexible acrylic and are almost invisible. We will review your health history, make a thorough oral examination, and take proper records and measurements, working with your needs, to design a partial denture for you.

How often should I get new dentures?
Everyone is different, but a good rule of thumb is every 6 to 8 years. As the teeth wear down, it may become harder to chew with an old denture. The bone and ridges inside the mouth also shrink with age, causing dentures to become loose and uncomfortable. The effects of both denture wear-down and bone loss can cause a person's bite to close, which can lead to the appearance of premature aging.
